Demolition & Haul-Away in Flagstaff, AZ

When an old structure has outlived its use, tearing it down yourself is rarely worth the risk. Rusted nails, rotten wood, buried footings, and a big pile of debris to deal with afterward turn a “quick weekend project” into a real headache. AZ Haul handles light demolition and removal in Flagstaff and across Northern Arizona, so the teardown and the haul-away happen in one visit. We are a veteran-owned local crew, we quote up front with no surprise fees, and we sweep the area clean before we leave.

Important: we handle non-structural, exterior light demolition only — the freestanding stuff out in your yard. We do not do interior demolition inside your home, and we do not touch load-bearing structures, foundations, concrete, or anything that requires a permit or a licensed general contractor. If your project is bigger than that, we will tell you straight and point you in the right direction.

Shed Demolition & Removal

A leaning, half-rotted shed eats up yard space and drops the look of the whole property. This is our bread and butter: we dismantle wood and metal sheds, load every board and panel, and haul it all away in the same trip. You get the square footage back and a clean slate — no dumpster to rent, no dump run to make. Need to clear what was inside the shed too? We can roll that into the job.

Deck, Fence & Playset Demolition

Old wood decks, sagging fences (wood, chain-link, or iron), and outgrown playsets all come down fast with the right crew and the right truck. We tear the structure down safely, pull the hardware, and recycle materials wherever the local facilities allow. When the kids have moved on from the swing set, we make short work of it.

Hot Tub Demolition & Removal

Hot tubs are heavy, awkward, and full of water and wiring — exactly the kind of teardown you do not want to attempt solo. Ideally the tub is drained and disconnected before we arrive, but that is not a requirement. If you would rather leave it to us, we can drain it, disconnect it from power, and safely cap off the wiring — power shut off at the main and the secondary breaker so nothing we touch is live. Then we cut it down, load the shell, panels, pipes, and cover, and haul the whole thing off.

Demolition Debris Hauled Away — In One Trip

The tear-down is only half the job; the debris is the other half. Because we are a full-service hauling company first, everything we demolish leaves with us. If you are already tackling a bigger project, pair this with our construction debris removal or grab a dumpster rental for the longer jobs. Clearing an estate or a rental? Our estate & garage cleanouts and appliance & furniture hauling round out the whole cleanout.

Planning Light Demolition and Haul-Away at Your Property

Light demolition is the right fit when an old structure in your yard has outlived its purpose and you want it gone without hiring a general contractor. Think of a leaning shed, a weathered deck, a sagging fence line, or a playset the kids outgrew years ago. This guide explains what to expect, what to prepare, and where the line is between a simple teardown and a project that needs permits and a licensed contractor.

AZ Haul is a veteran-owned, locally owned crew based in Bellemont, serving Flagstaff, Sedona, Williams, the Verde Valley, and nearby communities since 2022. Here’s how we approach demolition and haul-away jobs from start to finish.

What Light Demolition Covers

Most of what we take down are freestanding, non-structural outdoor builds. They’re standalone, they don’t hold up anything else, and they can be safely dismantled with hand and power tools.

  • Sheds: wood, metal, and resin sheds, including the floor platform when it isn’t set in concrete.
  • Decks: freestanding wood decks, steps, and railings.
  • Fences: wood, chain-link, and iron fence runs, including gates.
  • Playsets: wooden swing sets, climbing structures, and forts.
  • Small outdoor builds: pergola-style shade structures, raised garden beds, and old dog runs.

Shed Demolition

Shed demolition usually goes fastest when the shed is empty, but we can clear out the contents as part of the same visit. Roofing comes off first, then siding and framing, then the floor. Metal sheds are recycled when possible, and solid wood is kept separate from mixed debris.

Older sheds in Flagstaff often have rodent nests, wasp activity, or snow-damaged roofs. If yours has sagging panels or a collapsed corner, let us know when you call so we can plan for it.

Deck Demolition

Deck demolition takes more care than people expect. Boards are fastened with hundreds of nails or screws, and many older decks were attached to the house with a ledger board. We handle freestanding decks. If a deck is bolted to your home, the attachment point may involve flashing, siding, or the house structure, and that’s a conversation for a contractor first.

If your deck was painted decades ago, keep in mind that homes and structures built before 1978 may have lead-based paint. The EPA Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Program explains how lead paint is regulated and when certified contractors are required.

Interior Tear-Outs

AZ Haul does not perform interior demolition. If you or your contractor have already pulled out old cabinets, vanities, carpet, or fixtures, we’ll gladly haul it all away. Usable cabinets and fixtures often go to donation instead of the landfill. For larger remodel piles, see our construction debris removal service.

What’s Out of Scope

We stay in our lane on purpose. Anything structural, load-bearing, or attached to a foundation needs a licensed contractor, and often a permit. That includes:

  • Walls, roofs, or framing that are part of a house or garage
  • Foundations, concrete slabs, and footings
  • Structures with live electrical, gas, or plumbing connections we can’t confirm are shut off
  • Any project the City or County requires a permit for
  • Materials suspected to contain asbestos

Permit rules depend on where you live and what you’re removing. Before any project, check with the City of Flagstaff if you’re inside city limits, or Coconino County or your town if you’re outside it. HOAs may have their own rules about fences and outbuildings, too.

Shut Off Utilities Before Demolition Day

Many sheds have a light, an outlet, or a water line run to them. Some decks have lighting or a hose bib. Before any teardown, those need to be disconnected and made safe. If an electrician is needed to cap a circuit, schedule that first.

If the job involves pulling fence posts or deck footings from the ground, call 811 first. The Arizona Corporation Commission explains how Arizona 811 call-before-you-dig requests work, including the two working days locators have to mark buried lines. Gas, electric, and irrigation lines often run closer to fences and sheds than people think.

Safety During Light Demolition

Old structures fail in unpredictable ways. Rotten floor joists give way, roof panels slide, and fence sections can fall the wrong direction. Our crews work top-down, keep the area clear, and use gloves and eye protection throughout.

  • Keep kids and pets indoors or well away from the work area.
  • Move vehicles out of the driveway if the truck needs to get close.
  • Point out sprinkler heads, septic lids, or soft ground near the structure.
  • Don’t try to start the job yourself the night before. Half-collapsed structures are harder and riskier to finish.

How Demolition Debris Gets Sorted

Every structure breaks down into a few categories. Metal from roofing, hardware, chain-link, and brackets gets recycled. Clean, unpainted lumber is kept separate when possible. Painted or treated wood, roofing shingles, and mixed scraps go to the appropriate disposal facility.

The City of Flagstaff’s Where to Take Waste guide lists what’s accepted where. Anything hazardous found inside a shed, such as old paint, fuel cans, or pesticides, should go to the Flagstaff Hazardous Products Center, which offers free drop-off for City and County residents.

Light Demolition FAQs

Do I need a permit to tear down my shed or deck?

It depends on your location, the size of the structure, and whether it has utilities. We don’t issue or pull permits. Check with the City of Flagstaff, Coconino County, or your town before work starts.

Do I need to empty the shed first?

No. We can haul the contents and the structure in the same visit. Just set aside anything you want to keep, and keep hazardous items separate.

Can you remove a deck attached to my house?

We focus on freestanding decks. If a deck is bolted to the house, have a contractor look at the connection first. Once the attached portion is handled, we can take down and haul the rest.

Will you remove fence posts set in concrete?

Concrete is outside our scope. Ask about your specific posts when you call so we can tell you what we can handle.

What does the spot look like when you’re done?

We haul every piece of debris and sweep the area before we leave. Expect bare ground or a pad where the structure stood, with stray nails and screws picked up. If you plan to re-landscape or build something new there, tell us so we can leave the site ready for the next step.

How do I get a quote?

Send photos and rough dimensions of the structure, plus anything about access, slope, or utilities. Quotes are free.
